微软表示，Windows 11 是微软 Windows 10 桌面操作系统的继任者。
微软表示将在今年秋季推出面向消费者的操作系统，该公司明确表示不会简单地打开 “闸门”，让任何人今天都能获得更新。
微软称，Windows 10 、 Windows 7 、 Windows 8 和 Windows 8.1 用户可免费升级 Windows 11 。
从今年秋季开始，这些操作系统的所有者只要拥有 Windows 的正版副本，就可以通过 Windows 更新免费升级到 Windows 11 。
微软还说，Windows 11 将在下周首先向 Windows Insiders 推出，因此这些测试人员将在其他人之前看到升级通知。
