China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology on Tuesday approved a list of nine carmakers, including BYD, Nio and Changan Automobile, to test L3 and L4 autonomous driving technologies on certain roads in the country. The approved companies can conduct tests in seven selected cities, including Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Shenzhen. L3 and L4 levels mean that cars can go beyond assisted driving and make driving decisions based on information with limited human intervention. Analysts said the move would help automakers collect real-world road data to improve their autonomous driving technologies. Tesla, Xpeng and Seres failed to make it onto the list.
