Internet pioneer Daniel C. Lynch passed away at his home on Saint Helena Island, California, last Saturday at the age of 82. Lynch was a developer, researcher, and advocate of the TCP/IP protocol, playing a crucial role in its popularization and advancement. The TCP/IP protocol serves as the foundation of today’s internet. In the 1970s, Lynch was involved in the development of the TCP/IP protocol at Stanford Research Institute. He also played a key role in the transition of the precursor to the internet, ARPANET, to TCP/IP. Today, this protocol governs the way data is sent and received across networks. Lynch was also the founder of the renowned annual information technology conference, Interop, which he later sold to Ziff Davis, a major publisher of prominent media outlets such as PCMag, Mashable, and IGN. Lynch was also a co-founder of CyberCash, one of the earliest online payment services for e-commerce, which filed for bankruptcy in 2001.
