Microsoft is reportedly developing network card devices for data centers to reduce reliance on Nvidia. These devices are similar to Nvidia’s ConnectX-7 network cards, offering 400Gbit/s network ports for the networking infrastructure of hyperscale data centers, including Microsoft’s Azure. Nvidia sells ConnectX-7 network cards alongside its data center chips such as A100 and H100. These cards are used to connect multiple servers in a network, enabling them to exchange data with each other. Sources suggest that the network card could save Microsoft costs and improve performance for its Azure servers, potentially reducing the time required for OpenAI to train models on Microsoft’s servers. Satya Nadella has appointed Pradeep Sindhu, co-founder of networking equipment manufacturer Juniper Networks, to develop the new device. The tech giant acquired Sindhu’s startup Fungible last year.
