Yandex, the search engine company often referred to as the “Russian Google,” has sold its Russian business unit to local investors for a price of 475 billion rubles, equivalent to 4.8 billion euros. Over the past year and a half, Yandex has been in negotiations with the Kremlin to separate its Russian operations from its parent company based in the Netherlands. Bloomberg describes this as the “most valuable deal” among companies leaving Russia after the conflict with Ukraine. The management team of Yandex will gain majority ownership of the company, while a fund from Russian oil company Lukoil will hold a 10% stake. By divesting its Russian business unit, Yandex’s parent company will adopt a new brand name and focus on developing other international projects, including an AI cloud platform and autonomous driving technologies.
