A study by GfK and Telecompaper reveals that Dutch people are increasingly reluctant to replace their smartphones. By the end of 2020, approximately 33.4% of the Dutch population used their phones for at least three years, a percentage that rose to 41.4% in the first half of 2023. In 2020, around 35% of Dutch individuals replaced their phones within one year, but this figure dropped to 28% three years later. There are no significant differences in the duration of smartphone usage between Samsung and iPhone users. Several possible reasons contribute to this trend, including the diminishing visual differences and subtle nature of innovations among smartphones. Additionally, manufacturers are offering extended support and update cycles, further reducing the incentive for consumers to upgrade their devices.
