Sky

The Munich Regional Court in Germany has confirmed a rule that the termination of online subscriptions/contracts must be done without logging into the service website. After the Federation of German Consumer Organizations (vzbv) filed a lawsuit against Sky Deutschland Fernsehen GmbH & Co. KG, the Munich Regional Court confirmed this rule. Sky Wow customers cannot cancel their contract with the service before logging into their Wow website account. The court considers this to be an unnecessary and illegal barrier as it makes termination more difficult. Germany has required companies to provide easily accessible cancellation buttons on their websites since 2022. Although Wow provides a cancellation link, clicking on it requires logging into their website to terminate the subscription. The court now rules that online contracts can be terminated without logging into an account, and consumers can provide identity verification such as name and date of birth. An analysis by vzbv shows that 42% of websites offer these compliant options.

Sky has appealed this ruling to the Higher Regional Court in Munich.
