Australia bans the use of TikTok on government devices

The Australian government has banned the use of TikTok on all government devices. Attorney General Mark Dreyfus stated that the decision was made “after receiving advice from intelligence and security agencies” and will be implemented “as soon as practicable.” Similar bans have been issued by authorities in countries such as the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, and New Zealand.

According to DataReportal, there are over 8 million TikTok users aged 18 and above in Australia as of early 2023.

Lee Hunter, TikTok’s general manager for Australia and New Zealand expressed disappointment with the decision by authorities and claimed it was politically motivated. He argued that the company had repeatedly attempted constructive engagement with the Australian government and there is no evidence to suggest that this application poses a security risk to the country.
