Nokia will deploy 4G network on the moon this year

Finnish network company Nokia plans to launch a functional 4G network on the moon later this year. The network will consist of a base station and a mobile unit that communicate with each other via 4G. The hardware must be able to withstand the extreme environmental conditions on the moon. This base station and mobile unit will then be carried to the moon in a SpaceX mission, facilitated by Intuitive Nova-C lunar lander. SpaceX will not deliver the hardware all the way to the moon, but rather, the networking equipment will have its own propulsion system to complete its journey. The network is located on the south side of Shackleton Crater and will be used for NASA’s Artemis 1 mission. Astronauts can communicate with each other through this 4G network and also communicate with Mission Control for remote control of rovers and live video streaming from ground level.

NASA provided funding to Nokia several years ago to develop 4G technology suitable for use on the moon because devices must be able to withstand more extreme environmental conditions than those found on Earth.
