According to patent information released by the United States Patent and Trademark Office, Apple is considering developing a protective case with a touch screen for future versions of the Apple AirPods. The back of the protective case features a hinge design, while the front cover has an interactive touch screen. The display includes music playback controls such as pause, skip to previous/next track, search, etc. When users interact with the screen, haptic feedback will be provided by the shell. Another image shows a movie playing on the screen.
The patent also indicates that clicking and sliding are not the only ways to control audio on it; Apple hopes to introduce a squeezing mechanism for easy switching between audio modes.
The interactive screen will provide notifications from various applications such as email, messages, contacts etc. The display can allow users to access various functions ranging from calling Siri to controlling Apple Music or TV+, even quickly accessing maps.
Currently available AirPods cases only offer charging for wireless earphones and battery level checking along with device tracking functionality.
