The PC gaming platform Steam will abandon support for Windows 7, Win8 and 8.1 next year

The PC gaming platform Steam has announced that it will be ending support for Windows 7, Windows 8, and Windows 8.1 starting from January 1st, 2024. The Steam client will no longer run on these systems. Steam users will need to upgrade their operating system to either Windows 10 or Windows 11. The latest beta version of Steam has already started issuing “end of life” notifications to players using Windows 7, 8 or 8.1. Approximately 1.86% of Steam users are currently running these older operating systems.

Valve, the developer behind Steam, explained that “the latest features in Steam rely on an embedded version of Google Chrome which no longer supports older versions of the Windows operating system”.
