An open letter titled “Pause Large-Scale Artificial Intelligence Experimentation” has received over 1,500 online signatures from technology professionals at the time of this writing. The letter urges all AI labs to immediately stop training AI systems that are more powerful than GPT-4 for at least six months.
Signatories include several computer science experts as well as prominent technology leaders such as Steve Wozniak (co-founder of Apple), Evan Sharp (founder of Pinterest), and Elon Musk (CEO of Tesla).
The letter warns that modern artificial intelligence systems with “human competitive intelligence” could pose risks to society. In recent months, AI labs have been caught up in an out-of-control development race that “no one (not even their creators) can understand, predict or reliably control.”
The open letter raises several pointed questions: “Should we let machines flood our information channels with propaganda and false information? Should we automate all jobs, including satisfying ones? Should we develop non-human thought systems – in quantity greater than, intelligence higher than, replacing and eliminating us? Are we risking losing control over civilization?”
The open letter calls for a rapid pause on the training of “AI systems more powerful than GPT-4.” And warns that if such pauses cannot be implemented quickly then governments should intervene and impose bans.
The letter proposes that AI developers and policymakers use the buffer time gained from pausing to collaborate on developing a rigorously reviewed set of shared safety protocols for advanced AI design and development. It also suggests establishing mechanisms such as an AI regulatory agency, origin tracing and watermarking system, audit and certification ecosystem, public resource support institutions among others.
