Several well-known media outlets have stated that they will not consider subscribing to Twitter’s paid plan, Twitter Blue. According to CNN reporter Oliver Darcy, many media outlets including The New York Times, Los Angeles Times, and Politico have said that they do not intend to pay a monthly fee to verify their media accounts on Twitter or pay for the verification fee for their journalists through Twitter Blue. These media outlets believe that with Twitter Blue’s “verification as you buy” system, its authentication system can no longer establish authority or credibility.
In 2022, Twitter announced the launch of its paid subscription plan called Twitter Blue where users can pay $8 per month to obtain a blue verified badge on their profile. The existing free verification service is set to be discontinued on April 1st this year.
