Get a three-minute deep dive into Google’s Bard chatbot

The “AI wars” of 2023 are about to begin in earnest, and Google has just announced the opening of the preview application channel for its Bard chatbot to the public.

What is Bard?

Bard can be seen as Google’s response to OpenAI’s ChatGPT. Google is an absolute leader in the field of large language models (LLMs) and launched LaMDA (a conversational application language model), which can conduct smooth, multi-round conversations, two years ago. In 2022, Google also launched AI Test Kitchen, a new space where people can learn and experiment.

Bard builds on both of these, especially the lightweight and optimized version of LaMDA.

What can Bard do?

Google says that Bard can collaborate with users, stimulate their imagination, and help them improve work efficiency. Whether it’s helping plan the perfect birthday party, drafting an invitation, creating a list of pros and cons for a major decision, or simply understanding truly complex topics, Bard can help – similar to new Bing.

Initially, Bard will only support English, but Google plans to expand support to more languages and regions in the future.

How to apply to use Bard?

To use Bard, users first need to have a personal Google account. Now, they need to join the waitlist and, once approved, they will receive an email notification.

Bard currently cannot write code

Unlike new Bing, Google states that Bard is currently unable to help with coding. Bard is still learning to code, and official responses regarding code are not supported.

Google mobilizes the entire company to test Bard

Earlier reports show that Google has invested significant resources in testing and perfecting Bard, with thousands of external testers participating in Bard’s development.

Google CEO Sundar Pichai has asked Google employees to contribute 2-4 hours per day to help test Bard. Employees need to verify Bard’s answers and, if incorrect, can rewrite them correctly.

Google admits that Bard is not perfect

Google admits that, like all generative AI, Bard is experimental, and “some answers may be inaccurate.” But Bard is making progress every day.

At the same time, Google states that it intentionally limited Bard’s ability to handle user chat contexts. However, as Bard continues to learn, its ability to maintain context in longer conversations will improve.

In addition to Bard’s answers, Google encourages users to verify information

To help users verify information, Bard will provide links to resources outside of its answers that may provide more information on a topic. In most cases, users can also see suggested Google searches and a “Google it” button underneath the answer.

How to delete your chat history with Bard?

Google promises not to use Bard data for advertising and marketing purposes while allowing users to turn off or delete their Bard activity at any time, with the URL myactivity.google.com/product/bard.
