IDC: Global shipments of AR/VR headsets in 2023 will be lower than expected

International Data Corporation (IDC) predicts that the growth of shipments of augmented and virtual reality (AR/VR) headsets in 2023 will be lower than initially expected. Global shipments are expected to reach 10.1 million this year, growing 14% compared to 2022. The compound annual growth rate (CAGR) is expected to reach a higher 32.6% between 2023-2027.

Due to the macroeconomic environment, consumers are facing higher energy and food expenses, which will inevitably lead to a decline in demand for VR headsets.

IDC also believes that Sony’s new PSVR2 and Apple’s new products will help drive additional sales, and new devices from Meta and Pico are expected to be released by the end of 2023, which will create momentum for VR consumption in 2024. Xiaomi, Oppo, and TCL are also expected to release new products in the next 6 to 18 months, which will help increase consumer awareness.
