Browser maker Yandex has complained that AMD’s graphics drivers are biased towards certain browsers. The company accidentally discovered that when they renamed Yandex Browser’s executable file from “browser.exe” to “chrome.exe”, the GPU process crash rate decreased by 5.5 times, GPU process memory consumption decreased by an average of 8%, and even webpage loading speed slightly increased. “chrome.exe” is the executable file name used by Chromium-based browsers such as Chrome and Edge. Yandex Browser is also based on the Chromium kernel.
Yandex was surprised by this discovery and has reported the issue to AMD. Since Yandex version 22.9.0, the executable file has been renamed to “chrome.exe” as well.
