Microsoft Introduces New Policies for Win11: Smoother App Pinning and Changing Default Apps

Microsoft recently announced several improvements to Windows 11, including new policies for “app pinning” and “changing default apps”. This will first benefit Windows application developers to fine-tune the software experience.

The main improvements include:

  • Windows 11 will soon introduce a new deep-link URI for applications. It will allow applications to take users directly to the corresponding location in the “Settings” application, where they can set defaults. (Users no longer have to blindly search for settings manually)
  • Developers will have access to a publicly available API for managing primary or secondary pins on the taskbar. Apps using the API will be able to guide users in clear language to pin the app (or part of it) to the Win11 taskbar.

Microsoft emphasized that these new policies will not only be enforced on third-party apps, but also on its own applications. These two new features will soon be available to Windows Insider users for testing in the Dev Channel.
