New Zealand Bans TikTok on Government Devices, Foreign Ministry Responds

Following the UK’s lead, the New Zealand government has joined the ban on TikTok. Rafael Gonzalez-Montero, CEO of the New Zealand Parliamentary Service, announced on March 17th that all devices with access to the New Zealand parliamentary network will be banned from using TikTok by the end of March.

According to the website of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, spokesperson Wang Wenbin responded on March 17th to the TikTok ban in New Zealand.

French Press Agency Reporter: Yesterday, both New Zealand and the UK announced that TikTok would be banned on government devices for security reasons. What is China’s view on this?

Wang Wenbin: We have noticed relevant reports. China has always maintained that data security issues should not be used as a tool to generalize the concept of national security and unjustifiably suppress enterprises of other countries.

We call on relevant countries to abide by market economy rules and the principle of fair competition, to stop generalizing and abusing the concept of national security, and to provide a fair, transparent, and non-discriminatory business environment for companies of all countries.
