The Unconventional Computing Laboratory(UCL) in the UK is attempting to integrate mushroom fungi into PC motherboards in an effort to reduce production costs.
The lab is using mycelium (the branching, web-like root structure of fungi) as conductors and electronic components for computers. They can receive and send electrical signals and retain memory. Additionally, they can self-repair if damaged and can quickly change their configurations. However, they appear to lack the ability to handle high-end computing and are expected to only be suitable for low-power, low-end PCs.
This research is still far from being commercially viable in bulk, but it’s an interesting direction to explore.
