IDC’s forecast for global smartphone shipments turns pessimistic

The International Data Corporation (IDC) has turned pessimistic about this year’s smartphone shipments. It has now revised its forecast for 2023 shipments from an earlier prediction of a 2.8% growth in shipments to an estimated 1.1% decline to 1.19 billion units. Specifically, IDC expects Android device shipments to decline by 1.2% and iOS device shipments to decline by 0.5% this year.

Nabila Popal, research director of IDC’s Mobile and Consumer Devices Trackers, believes that although regions such as China have reopened from the Covid pandemic, there is still a lot of uncertainty, so the organization remains cautious about the outlook. IDC believes that the global market will recover its growth in 2024. At the same time, it expects 5G devices to account for 62% of smartphone shipments this year, and the foldable phone market to continue growing.
