China’s Henan Province sees first negative population growth since 1961

According to the Henan Provincial Bureau of Statistics on the 20th, the total permanent population of Henan Province continued to decline in 2022, and the natural population growth was negative for the first time in more than 60 years.

The data shows that at the end of 2022, the province’s permanent population was 98.72 million people, a decrease of 110,000 people from the end of 2021. Compared with a decrease of 580,000 people in 2021, the decline narrowed. In 2022, the province’s birth population was 733,000 people, with a birth rate of 7.42‰; the death population was 741,000 people, with a death rate of 7.50‰; the natural population growth was -8,000 people, with a natural growth rate of -0.08‰. The natural population growth rate showed negative growth for the first time in 62 years (since 1961).
