AMD’s new graphics card driver causes performance degradation on some Win11 devices

AMD fixed driver timeouts, system freezes or blue screen failures on RX 7000 series GPUs earlier this month by releasing an updated AMD Software Adrenalin Edition 23.3.1 graphics card driver. However, the latest driver seems to have caused a new problem – Steam user “opinali” reported a performance degradation issue on a Windows 11 22H2 PC running Radeon 7900 XTX and Ryzen 9 5900X. His 3DMark Time Spy (a comprehensive benchmark test based on DirectX 12) score dropped significantly, with a performance drop of up to 50%. See below.

A 3DMark developer responded that about 3% of Time Spy users experienced performance degradation after updating to the latest 23.3.1 driver. But the problem seems to only affect Windows 11 Release Preview preview version, so the impact is limited, and it’s not that obvious for gaming performance. AMD has reproduced the problem and should get it fixed later.
